What is REES?

The Retailers Energy Efficiency Scheme (REES) is an energy efficiency scheme that commenced on 1 January 2015. Under this scheme, most South Australian energy retailers are required to provide incentives for both households and businesses, with the aim of achieving energy savings to potentially lower energy bills.

In the average Australian home, heating and cooling alone occupies 40% of home energy use. Additionally, 23% is used for water heating, 7% for lighting and 3% for standby power. However, under the REES service, you may be eligible for energy saving products that help you to save on your electricity bill. At Esena Energy, we are offering three free energy saving devices and home energy assessments.

Esena is an installation partner to accredited activity provider YESS.

Free REES home energy assessment

For customers who meet the eligibility criteria, an energy assessor will conduct a free home assessment. They will review how you use your energy and suggest ways you could increase your energy efficiency, therefore saving on your bills.

Who is eligible?

The free REES energy saving products are available to all house addresses in South Australia that have not previously had devices installed under REES.

Additionally, one free home energy assessment is available for Priority Group Households. To be eligible for the free assessment, a person living in the household must currently hold one of the following concession cards issued by the Commonwealth Government:

  • Pension Concession Card; or
  • Health Care Card (including a Low Income Health Care Card); or
  • TPI or War Widows Gold Repatriation Health Card; or
  • Gold Repatriation Health Care (EDA).

Alternatively, you may be an eligible Priority Group Household if a person in your household:

  • Is an active participant in an energy concession or energy retailer hardship program; or
  • Receives the South Australian Government Energy Concession; or
  • Has been referred by a registered member of the South Australian Financial Counsellors Association (SAFCA).

Under the scheme, we are unable to replace non-working globes or install globes into empty sockets. As part of the free service, we are unable to replace compact fluorescent globes or downlights. To be eligible for shower head replacement, your existing shower heads must use more than 9 litres per minute. Shower heads are not compatible with instantaneous or gravity fed hot water systems.

Frequently asked questions

Who will conduct my assessment?

Your assessment will be conducted by one of our REES accredited assessors. All of our assessors hold a Certificate IV in Home Sustainability Assessment.

How long will an assessment and product replacement take?

This process is normally completed within an hour. However, time may vary depending on the size of your home, energy usage and your current appliances.

Will products be installed during my assessment?

Depending on your situation and which solutions are required, some products can be installed during the assessment. If not, we will make a time to complete the installation.

How will this help me to save money?

The REES assessment and audit identifies your current energy consumption. As a result, practical energy saving solutions are provided to help you reduce the amount of energy you consume. This can include switching to stand-by controllers which automatically switch off when not in use, reducing your energy consumption and saving you money.

If I am already energy conscious, can REES still benefit me?

Yes. While you may already be energy conscious, the assessment with our REES accredited assessors will check on your current energy saving activities, provide greater awareness, and install free energy saving products (depending on your eligibility). It’s a win-win!

I have a solar system in place, can REES further benefit me?

While a solar system is reducing your energy bills, the REES service can further identify ways of reducing your energy usage. This can further reduce your cost of energy.

Can the REES service benefit me if I don’t use much energy?

Yes. Whether it be because you are already making a conscious effort to minimise your energy usage, or because there are few people in your household, REES can help you to further reduce your energy usage.

Can I still receive the REES assessment and products if I am a renter?

If you are a tenant of a rental property, you can still receive the home energy assessment and energy efficient products. You must meet the eligibility criteria, and you may be required to obtain the permission of the landlord before products are installed.
